what if our heroes aren't perfect?

Reader thoughts: Compared to the first one, this book has more team-person issues rather than gun-down-the-enemy issues. It is still well-balanced, but it does take a step closer to "everyone has tense relations with allies" rather than just "kill epics die die die."
Anyway, Firefight is full of lots of action and inner conflict as well. David doesn't know how to swim, which is fun in a city surrounded by water. What does he do about Megan? How can they help this city? Are some epics worth leaving alive? David guesses weaknesses like a pro, too. Compliments!
I liked the water/Calamity scene, esp with everything else David had to go through. It definitely feels like the moment Frodo/Isildor stands with the ring over Mount Doom and has to decide whether to keep the power or give it up. What would you do?
The ending was so good, too. Sad, in some ways, but an exciting transition to the next conflict.
Writer thoughts: There's less planning in this book and more reacting. It makes it feel less like a heist novel. The first one, the team planned for over a week to take down the epic. This book, they planned but never had anything solid and kept just reacting to what the epics were doing topside. They weren't sure how to stop Regalia or Obliteration and just kept running after the epics when they started killing people.
This happened for two reasons, I think. (Maybe more, but I can think of two.)
1, the second book in a trilogy often has the good guys playing catch-up. The bad guys seem to be winning. This is a dark time in a trilogy's development. If the team had everything planned perfectly, the book would seem too easy, less tense.
2, it had to show that the Reckoners were fallible. They could face epics without a plan sometimes. They could lose. This also helps raise tension for the last book because readers don't know whether to expect another book 1 (Reckoners plan and win) or a book 2 (Reckoners struggle to hold their own and maybe die/fail). You'll have to read Calamity to find out.

Twice as great

Originally I didn't think I would be interested in this series I picked up the first book because my boyfriend had suggested it. I breezed through the first one and it was really good I didn't think the second one could get any better. I figured it would be one of those series of books that shouldn't have gone past the first, one that kept going on repetitively but there are lots of plot twists and this series just gets better and better!
Probably my new favorite books.

It's like a German Chocolate Cake Covered in Hot Sauce

No wait, just hear me out. You see, you think you want to just have the nice tasty cake, but fail to notice the hot sauce. Then, because the hot sauce has a lingering effect, you end up thinking about the cake longer than you thought you would!
I have a large family and lots of outside commitments on top of that, but whenever a new Brandon Sanderson book comes out I put things on hold and pull up a chair to find out what kind of wickedly cool ideas he has come up with this time. Pick up this book and read it (you know, after you've read the first one and Mitosis). You'll still be feeling the burn for while after you finish it.
