Good Introduction

3.5/5 Stars. I applaud Dr. Donohoe for his effort to raise awareness and highlight the numerous areas where social justice is lacking and the public health system is failing. I also appreciate the fact the author has made the material accessible online.

Where the book falls short is with over-generalizations and at times under-supported conclusions. This weakness varies depending on the author of the chapter, but is frustrating from the perspective of trying to separate fact from opinion.

For example, I found Vincent Navarro's inclusion of the Infant Mortality Rate Graph, Figure 3.1 on page 29 misleading. The author uses the graph to show a decrease in the level of improvement in infant mortality, but fails to address the fact that reduction in infant mortality does not have to be linear. Ultimately the infant mortality is decreasing. This author includes this information in a section entitled "The Failure of Neoliberalism". Be cool, be bold, brand yourself

Ros Taylor has written a business book about the important stuff at work, about you and me, not profits and losses. It really does begin with you and me and a simple questionnaire on how we experience our own confidence. Then a highly readable review of some sensible theory from scientists not shamans, including Seligman's learned optimism and a self-assessment. To illustrate Ros Taylor offers us autobiographical clips from her childhood and family and from her experience as a clinical psychologist - cases of prisoners and institutionalized people - and as an executive coach - cases of CEOs and senior executives. And a hint on why the best confidence tricksters are first and foremost likeable people!

The book is peppered with intelligent tips. Simple, not simplistic. Tips on doing, tips on being. Be cool. Be bold. Brand yourself. What if you were a car, what's your favorite color?

A book on leadership that first gently urges you, as did the ancient Socrates, to know yourself. Then understand how you relate to others. Recognize the impact of first impressions. Be conscious of the "image" that you are broadcasting with your words and your movements.

And Ros Taylor's penmanship flows beautifully too.

I thought this was an excellent read and thoroughly enjoyed doing the exercises and questionnaires. It facilitates self-reflection which is never a bad thing, and gave an interesting perspective on a variety of issues. I would highly recommend this book for leaders and aspiring leaders, and in fact anyone who wants to make an impact in the workplace!

Every photo inspires better technique

So many great things to say about Advanced Rock Climbing, but for starters, the book is a standout, because Donahue incorporates his beautiful photography into a clear and simple narrative. This helps the reader understand everything so much better! Not to mention making the book inspiring and engaging. These are not reactions generally expressed about a book on techniques. The next thing that struck me was how his stories and anecdotes allow the reader to relate to his advice, regardless of experience or skill level. I told my step-daughter to read the chapter on belaying before we went out for her first belaying instruction. It's not that she needed to know the nuanced techniques for providing a soft catch to a smaller leader on her first day of instruction, but the details gave her a fuller appreciation for the role of the belayer. She better understood the basics, because the book went beyond the basics with story-telling that she could relate to (even if only in her imagination). The same can be said for the other chapters.

Listening to the Inner Game

The extant coaching literature, coaching associations, coaching practitioners and the coaching industry value the competency of listening in coaching. Without listening, the coach would be not be able to understand, explore, respond and move forward the coaching conversation. There is much written about how to listen in different contexts and how to listen as a coach.

This Coaching Insight explores the topic of listening from a different though academic angle: what is going on inside the coach's mind when they are trying to listen. To examine this question, I explore the literature to understand the theoretical discussions that relate to this aspect of listening and then use my own experience to see what goes on inside my own head while I coach.

From a personal perspective, it is clear to me that my internal dialogue is constantly occurring as framed by my thoughts and feelings. Descartes' Cogito, expresses this as "I think, therefore I am," (Williams, 1978, p.73). In a coaching context, Tim Gallwey focused on one's internal dialogue which he saw as an "Inner Game" (Gallwey, 1988, p.74) that is negative in undermining confidence through "self doubt and condemnation" (Gallwey, 2008, p.17). Annie Kimblin (2009) goes further in investigating the occurrence and effects of the Inner Game as perceived by the coach and the strategies coaches use to regulate their Inner Game.

Using Kimblin's four investigative questions in her study, this Coaching Insight is an analysis of my own Inner Game, its impact on my Executive Coaching (Kampa-Kokesch et al., 2001) and effective strategies to manage my Inner Game.

The findings delineate how, when and why my Inner Game is negative and positive. Most importantly, it recognises my intuitive inner voice, which is always enriching to my coaching and, as such, is not an Inner Game obstacle, but incredibly valuable inner input from my deeper subconscious. Finally, this Coaching Insight feedforwards (Goldsmith, 2010) to how to best manage my Inner Game for maximising my performance in my Executive Coaching, using the profound insights from this valuable internal metacognitive (Terrace et al., 2009) investigative process. Whilst the findings pertain to an analysis of my experience, they demonstrate how one can apply strategies for exploring one's own Inner Game and evaluate the usefulness of the Game or its hindrance.

The analysis also calls for a consideration of a fifth question in addition to Kimblin's four questions for research to further consider the internal subconscious dialogue beyond the Inner Game. I also invite you to consider some questions about your inner dialogue and how it influences your coaching.

Finally, this Coaching Insight feedforwards (Goldsmith, 2010) to how to best manage my Inner Game for maximising my performance in my Executive Coaching, using the profound insights from this valuable internal metacognitive (Terrace et al., 2009) investigative process. An insightful and useful resource for coaches and those interested in coaching...

Diann's detailed explanation of her Inner Game in relation to coaching was a fascinating read and was also an extremely useful resource for an assignment I was working on at the time for my Masters. It is a quick read with great insight and recommendations at the end. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in coaching (and mentoring) especially those that are keen to improve their own coaching skills by better managing their Inner Game.

Each review a new lession

I have read and reread this book 3 times so far and each time I get a new learning.

First time, it helped me develop a structure to my supervising coaching conversations within a coaching program I created for our Sales directors throughout Asia Pacific and Japan.

Second time, it gave me a critical idea that helped me overcome an issue I had when introducing a coaching program into Hong Kong and China.

Third time, my own coaching was flipped on its head when I realised my self-1 was dominating my internal game much like the Williams sisters in women's tennis and just like that analogy it was so frequent it became the norm. A big arr ha moment.

READ THIS BOOK MORE THAN ONCE.

A great eye opener

I had a lot of fun reading this book. It is a tremendously balanced approach to game theory - not claiming that game theory is the solution, but rather a generalized approach that itself has flaws. It was a great overview of the history of game theory, its practical applications and limitations, and its proper applications. While this book does dive into the logic (sometimes deeply) it is still approachable for the non math inclined. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in problem solving and theory.
