A Cisco book not limited to cisco devices.

This is my first ethical hacker book, it is very exciting!!. Covers almost every aspect of penetration testing in good length. Explains many types of scans a penetration tester can and can't perform, gives specific reason why you should choose to perform those different types of scan, which ones you should use to keep from being detected.
It gives an easy to understand explanation of types of attacks, how to performed, tools needed, and how to protect/detect from such attacks. It also discusses the difficulty of detecting certain of attacks.
It also has an entire chapter regarding the legal considerations and implication of penetration testing. And the great thing about this book is that even though it is cisco book, it covers many divices and operatings system.

Readers Pre-Requirements:

Although I couldn't found pre-requirements for the book readers, I can recommended using this book to readers that answer to the following pre-requirements:

1. Have basic knowledgebase in Linux/Unix administrations.

2. Have good knowledgebase in TCP/IP Networking design and implementations

(Recommended to have at least CCNA and CCDA Certifications)

3. Have at least two years of experience in SMB-Enterprise infrastructure administrations.

Book Structure:

The book build as 16 self study chapters that's cover most of the information that's ethical hacker (or beginner penetration tester) needs.

The book begin with a nice introduction on the reasons that companies should use penetration testing and divided this reasons to major stages that's parallel to known security models (Like: C.I.A. :Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability).

The next chapters review the requirements to penetration testing and legal issues with penetration testing.

Chapter 2 - Legal and Ethics Considerations - Should cover more information from my point of view and add a warning message to people that work as penetration testers that need legal support from the law team from the test company and the target test company should be used.

Most of the companies and the management (Usually in states outside the United States) don't understand the consequence of this tests and don't know what to do with the test results.

Also, due the privacy invasion and the current laws against privacy invasion - this topic is very important to understand and to know how to handle.

Add this information to this book can help to complete the missing information in Chapter 2.

The next chapters cover most of the public known attack technique and give a real life scansions and solutions for attacks.

My conclusion is: The book is recommended to each IT staff and beginner penetration tester.

I found the book a bit dated. The book seemed more about Network Defense than Pen testing. For someone interested in Pen testing, there are much better books available

The authors start from the premise that corporate (or company) law across jurisdictions addresses the same three basic agency problems: (1) the opportunism of managers vis-à-vis shareholders; (2) the opportunism of controlling shareholders vis-à-vis minority shareholders; and (3) the opportunism of shareholders as a class vis-à-vis other corporate constituencies, such as corporate creditors and employees. Every jurisdiction must address these problems in a variety of contexts, framed by the corporation's internal dynamics and its interactions with the product, labor, capital, and takeover markets. The authors' central claim, however, is that corporate (or company) forms are fundamentally similar and that, to a surprising degree, jurisdictions pick from among the same handful of legal strategies to address the three basic agency issues.

This book explains in detail how and why the principal European jurisdictions, Japan, and the United States sometimes select identical legal strategies to address a given corporate law problem, and sometimes make divergent choices. After an introductory discussion of agency issues and legal strategies, the book addresses the basic governance structure of the corporation, including the powers of the board of directors and the shareholders meeting. It proceeds to creditor protection measures, related-party transactions, and fundamental corporate actions such as mergers and charter amendments. Finally, it concludes with an examination of friendly acquisitions, hostile
takeovers, and the regulation of the capital markets.

But in November 1897, Dr. Borchardt reported the important discovery that the royal tomb found by M. de Morgan in the spring of that year at Nagada, situate opposite Coptos, a little north of Thebes, is that of Menes, the founder of the First Dynasty, whose date Professor Flinders Petrie fixes at 4777 B.C., "with a possible error of a century." Calcined remains of the body are now in the Gizeh Museum, and, among other objects, the broken fragments of an ivory plaque which, when joined, showed the ka name of Aha (the ka being the "double" or "other self "of the deceased which abode with the mummy), and, attached thereto, the name MN--Menes, borne by the Pharaoh during his lifetime. Assuming that Dr. Borchardt's interpretation is accepted by Egyptologists, it proves that the hieroglyphic system of writing was then already fully developed. It may be remarked, incidentally, that among the remains of the predynastic race discovered by Professor Flinders Petrie in 1895, in the district north of Thebes, no hieroglyphs or traces of other writing were found. There was evidence of knowledge of metals, but not of the potter's wheel. It therefore seems probable that writing came in with the First Dynasty, which, according to M. de Morgan, was descended from Chaldean Semites. But more interesting, for the light thrown on early Egyptian thought, than inscriptions on steel or plaque are the copies of portions of the sacred literature entitled "Chapters of the Coming Forth by Day," and also the " Chapters of Making Strong the Beatified Spirit," but commonly known as the Book of the Dead. This book is a truely wonderful collection of text, tables and drawings. The small cartoons break up the monotony of study, as well as providing visual prompts regarding the particular condition.

Best resource out there

*DISCLAIMER* I am not a physical therapist...I have a connective tissue disorder, so my hips and shoulders are unstable. At age 27, my entire body started to fall apart. I am still trying to put it back together.

I have been through several physical therapists and they all seem to regurgitate the same information and do not address the entire body. Dr. Osar's approach is out of the box, but ironically, full of common sense. I would HIGHLY recommend this as a resource for anyone with winged scapulae. They are particularly hard to treat and traditional approaches to shoulder rehab will actually make you worse.

Functional Movement

As a woman in her late seventies who is active and works out, I found Evan Osar's book to be an excellent resource for all things related to body movement. The book is well-organized with lots of images and references to videos for ease in understanding. He covers basic principles of movement that I find helpful in my activities of daily living. He also describes specific exercises that I refer to on a regular basis because the format is so easy to follow:
"Key to Performance" tells me how to do the exercise.
"Client Sensation" tells me how I should be feeling.

Overall the book really speaks to me.
So if you are interested in fitness you will definitely like Evan Osar's book.

The Best Book for Healing Your Shoulder!!!

I am performing the crawling exercises recommended in this book, and it is healing my shoulder impingement rapidly. This is absolutely amazing ... who would have thought that simple crawling exercises would correct shoulder impingement and rotator cuff injuries! Apparently it works by neurologically remapping the brain to specific muscle movements through repetition. These crawling exercises were first developed by Dr. Vaclav Vojta in the 1950's and have been used ever since to treat babies born with cerebral palsy. Just think about it ... how did we first, as babies, develop correct functional movement and strength -- through crawling, of course! In my opinion, these crawling exercises are much more therapeutic than the traditional exercises that are prescribed for rotator cuff injury by physical therapists. On a side note, if you have pain in any part of your body (other than your shoulder), I highly recommend a book called "The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion (a yoga-based method). In two months, it cured the carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and shoulder pain that I had suffered from for over 30 years. In reading the boook, I found that most pain in our bodies is caused by poor posture, prolonged sitting, and lack of exercise. "The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion" helped me to correct all of my postural issues (a lower right shoulder, an elevated and torqued right hip, cartilage damage in my knees, over-pronating ankles, and fallen arches) in two months. Another book that I highly recommend is called "Movement: Functional Movement Systems" by Gray Cook, who prescribes crawling exercises to fix shoulder impingement.
