El libro parte del supuesto de que un coraz�n roto es el punto de partida necesario para alcanzar un nivel de conciencia m�s profundo, a la vez que nos previene de los enfoques psicol�gicos tradicionales que nos dicen #olv�dalo y sigue adelante# y aconseja enfrentar la p�rdida para encontrar #oro en las cenizas#.
Un coraz�n roto afecta las funciones cerebrales, pues el dolor ps�quico asociado al duelo es equiparable, neurobiol�gicamente, al estr�s que experimenta alguien sometido a tortura. Por ello, Paris se centra en la tesis de que este dolor puede superarse a trav�s de un salto evolutivo, es decir, a partir del deseo o la necesidad de buscar una salida al desierto emocional de la ruptura, provocando que el cerebro establezca nuevas conexiones y el individuo recupere el sentido y la alegr�a. A la par se debe asumir la p�rdida y reconocer que el dolor existe y es inevitable, pues negarlo tendr�a como consecuencias la eventual p�rdida de la capacidad de amar y la disociaci�n de la psique y el cuerpo, lo cual desembocar�a inevitablemente en s�ntomas f�sicos.
Paris escribi� Roto desde tres perspectivas: como profesora e investigadora en el campo de la psicolog�a; como terapeuta, y como mujer que ha sufrido m�s de una vez la experiencia de un coraz�n roto. Para elaborarlo entrevist� a pacientes, estudiantes, amigos y colegas, cuyas historias aparecen en peque�as vi�etas, contadas por medio de im�genes y met�foras que permiten comunicar la esencia arquet�pica de su dolor.
