No matter what DBMS you are using—Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL—misunderstandings can always arise over the precise meanings of terms, misunderstandings that can have a serious effect on the success of your database projects. For example, here are some common database terms: attribute, BCNF, consistency, denormalization, predicate, repeating group, join dependency. Do you know what they all mean? Are you sure?
The New Relational Database Dictionary defines all of these terms and many, many more. Carefully reviewed for clarity, accuracy, and completeness, this book is an authoritative and comprehensive resource for database professionals, with over 1700 entries (many with examples) dealing with issues and concepts arising from the relational model of data. DBAs, database designers, DBMS implementers, application developers, and database professors and students can find the information they need on a daily basis, information that isn’t readily available anywhere else.

An indispensable addition to the technologist’s bookshelf
By Jerry Saperstein
As I read the opening pages of this truly valuable book by Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) pioneer and expert C. J. Dale, I was reminded of a frustrating afternoon I spent several years ago with an RDBMS administrator. Both of us were trying hard and in good faith to communicate about configuring searches of a company’s data without violating various privacy concerns. It took us hours to formulate search expressions that satisfied both of us and fir, we hoped, within the court’s deliberately narrow strictures.
Both the manager and I were familiar with RDBMS structures, but we didn’t have a common nomenclature, which is not at all uncommon in this kind of situation.
This dictionary/encyclopedia would have been so useful for us.
Compiled by one the actual pioneers in RDBMS, this book explains in great detail more than 1,700 entries “dealing with issues, terms, and concepts involved in, or arising from the use of, the relational model of data”.
This is not a book for beginners. The writing style is definitely not in the same vein as the “Dummies” books.
This is a reference for experienced database designers, implementers and developers – and those aspiring toward such careers.
The author claims that his work covers Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL and more, though he points out that he has omitted certain SQL topics that he feels are not truly part of the RDBMS model. And if you understand that last part, you’re ready for this book.
In all seriousness, if you’re working at all extensively with any RDBMS, you want this book. It is a great addition to your database knowledge library.

Another great work from C. J. Date
By Y. Kim
If you are serious about the relational database or RDBMS, you probably hear C. J. Date who is an author of this book. I learned the database in the class by the book he wrote and his books have been always my reference for anything related to databases. Now I have a real dictionary of all the database terms and acronyms from him and this book is a true reference of the relational database. As the name dictionary implies, the definition of terms are listed alphabetically by the 3 parts: Types and Relations, Inheritance, and Intervals. Each part has its own A to Z order of terms and each definition includes small sample which I liked it a lot.
This book is not intended for an absolute beginner in the relational database, however, if the beginner uses this book while they are learning the database, this book would be a great guide to sort out all the complicated concepts and definitions that they might face. I wish I had this this book when I started to study about the database. The contents in the book are very thorough and readable. Overall, this is a great reference for the relational database and I would keep this book longer than any other database books I have. Kudos to C. J. Date.

Comprehensive and useful
By Amazon Customer
This is a comprehensive and invaluable resource for database professionals, containing over 1700 entries "dealing with issues and concepts arising from the relational model of data". It is essentially an encyclopedia of terms and concepts for DBAs, database designers, managers, application developers and any professionals involved in a database project such that they may communicate effectively without creating misunderstandings that can negatively impact the project.
The book is written like a regular A-Z dictionary. It is divided into three parts: (1) Types and Relations, (2) Inheritance and (3) Intervals. Many definitions come with clarifying examples that are based on a common suppliers-and-parts database. These examples are expressed in a platform-independent language called Tutorial D, and would apply equally well to any RDBMS systems. This is a comprehensive dictionary - many entries are common, day-to-day terms whose meanings that are often taken for granted (and sadly easily misunderstood), other entries are more academic that few professionals have even heard of.
This is well-written book that is easy to reference. It is an indispensable tool for any functional or cross-functional teams of professionals working in a project involving the relational model of data. A great addition to your technical library
