A Detailed, Aesthetically-Pleasing, and Multi-Disciplinary Study
By Theseus
"All of Islamic art is based upon beautifully intricate geometric patterns. In this pictorial volume, photographs of mausoleums, minarets, and other decorative artifacts are related to diagrams that start with the circle -- the "image of an intimate whole" -- and progress into elaborate star-shaped polygons."
"The authors trace the use of these sacred patterns back to the very earliest methods that Islamic artists used in architecture for the measurement of space. The study of their artistic methods explores polygon construction, proportion, geometric repetition, and the golden ratio as they relate to the creation of harmonious designs."
154 pp, large trade paperback, b&w illustrations throughout. Bibliography.

Great book!
By Nadine
Great book! I have Issam's second book "The system of Geometric Design" which is very similar to this book, however this book has a lot more pattern constructions - especially on ten fold rosette patterns. I've been collecting books on islamic pattern constructions and the best books with clear instructions so far are:
Geometric concepts in islamic art - Issam El Said
The system of Geometric Design - Issam El Said
Arts and Crafts of the Islamic Lands - Khaled Azzam
Islamic Patterns - Keith Critchlow
Islamic Design, A genius for Geometry - Daud Sutton
Islamic Geometric Patterns - Eric Broug
Islamic Geometric Design - Eric Broug
There is also one more book called Arabesques by Jean Marc Castera but it is out of print and very expensive.
Also if you want to learn the basics of geometry before embarking on drawing islamic patterns then I suggest:
Drawing Geometry - Keith Critchlow
Ruler and Compass - Andrew Sutton (The appendix is particularly helpful)
Hope this helps!

Divine Geometry and Art
By Deer
Geometric Concepts in Islamic Art It was difficult trying to choose which book on Islamic art to buy for my lesson planning for art classes on the Navajo rez. I wanted to find a book that would help me collaborate with core class teachers to give the students a boost in math and geometry. It appears I guessed well. This book gives simple compass and straight edge rule directions toward creating incredibly beautiful polygon tiles. I think the experience will help in understanding measure without all the mathematical equations. And a fabulous piece will go into their portfolios!
Enough history is included to assist the social studies teacher, to boot!
